Good evening, boils and ghouls! It’s your pal, the Dashkeeper, with another Dash Tunes! Still enjoying your daily dose of Murder, Madness and Mayhem? Well, you guys have been so good lately, how’s about I treat you all to an appetizer before the “slain” course tomorrow? HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Consider this a bit of a spoiler for this month, because I am excited to finally go in depth on one of my favorite cult films ever. So to get ourselves prepared, let’s take a look at yet another amazing horror movie soundtrack…shall we?
I “Crypt-Keep” no promises! Anyways, this album actually holds a very special place in my heart, if you couldn’t tell from my excitement. Much like the ‘Nightmare On Elm Street 4’ soundtrack, this is another diverse collection of music which all perfectly fits the tone of the film. As a Pantera fan, it was so great to look back and see that not only is a Pantera song on the soundtrack but my absolute favorite song from the band, ‘Cemetery Gates’. I just love the song’s slow build from the very ominous acoustic-ballad opening to the loud and hard-hitting Groove Metal the band has been known for, all the while we hear lead singer Phil Anselmo showing off some amazing vocal range. Oh, and don’t even get me started on the legendary guitar riffs and solo from the late, great Dimebag Darrell.
We may have one of the greatest songs of all time on this album, but don’t count the rest of the songs out just yet. ‘Demon Knight’ also has ‘Diadems’; an underrated gem in my opinion, from one of the Big Four in Thrash Metal, Megadeth(pre-Super Collider, of course).
You also got ‘Tonight We Murder’ from Ministry, ‘Beaten’ from Biohazard and ‘Hey Man Nice Shot’ from Filter; all of which are equally good tracks. Then we have what I consider to be the underdog of the album. ‘1-800 Suicide’ from hip-hop group Gravediggaz. This group is lead by hip-hop legend The Rza from The Wu-Tang Clan and are one of the groups that started the Horrorcore sub-genre. The song does not hold any punches with its many references to death and suicide. Graphic and violent lyrics backed up by some haunting music, proving that it can hold its own with the likes of the other Rock and Metal songs on the album. I don’t always listen to Horrorcore…but when I do, I prefer Gravediggaz.
For any fans of Sepultura, The Melvins, Henry Rollins and Machine Head, you’ll be happy to know that they’re on this album too. However, with the exception of ‘Policia’ from Sepultura, I wasn’t all too crazy for the rest of the songs on the album. The weakest for me being Machine Head’s ‘My Misery(Demon Knight)’.
Much like the film itself, the soundtrack to ‘Demon Knight’ is nothing but pure effort and enjoyment, despite its shortcomings. I would not be surprised to find out I was not the only one who was secretly listening to this album growing up, as this soundtrack was my gateway drug to Rock and Metal music. If you’re a fan of the HBO TV series, the movie or if you’re just looking for a compilation of some hard-hitting tracks for your collection, then look no further. Now, this review is hereby…condemned!
HAHAHA! Alright, kiddies…until tomorrow, Gotta Dash!
